Why Simon Pegg Didn't Like The Star Trek Beyond Trailer

With all of the hullabaloo surrounding Star Wars: The Force Awakens as it opens and takes over the free world this weekend, it’s easy to forget that there’s another venerable science fiction franchise with another installment on the way: Star Trek. The first trailer for Star Trek Beyond was recently released and let’s just say it split fans of the Federation. One person who wasn’t a huge fan of this initial glimpse was co-writer and star Simon Pegg.

At the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere, British website Hey U Guys caught up with the actor, who plays Scotty in Star Trek Beyond and also co-authored the screenplay with Doug Jung, and asked him about his thoughts on the trailer. He was very frank and said:

I didn't love it, because I know there's a lot more to the film. There's a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more what I would call 'Star Trek stuff.'

In his opinion, Pegg appears to think that the marketing department at Paramount, the studio behind he film, wanted to create a more universal trailer, trying to inject something for everyone, rather than tapping into the Star Trek-ness of the movie. But if you are one of the worried parties, and there are quite a few out there, Pegg does want to set your mind at ease and assures us that this short first look is not necessarily representative of the entire movie.

Abandoning the elements that make Star Trek Star Trek in favor of an action heavy approach has been a concern of many fans for a while. The last film, Star Trek Into Darkness, is thought of by many as one of the worst Trek movies, despite a solid critical response and box office haul, and fans of the franchise have been hesitant.

Though few were sad to see him go, original writer/director Roberto Orci butted heads with the studio, who reportedly wanted something more along the lines ofGuardians of the Galaxy. He was then replaced by Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin, and with the Beastie Boys track, motorcycle jumping, and more in the trailer, many fans assume that their fears of Star Trek Beyond becoming The Fast & The Furious In Space have been realized.

Hopefully what Simon Pegg says is actually the truth, and that what we see in the trailer does not represent the whole of Star Trek Beyond. There’s definitely going to be quite a bit of action involved, but we can handle that as long as we get the promised story, character and "Star Trek stuff."
