Weekend Box Office: Mockingjay Part 2 Threepeats At Number One As Krampus Scares Up Holiday Success
Despite sliding a hefty 60%+ this weekend, the absence of anything new except a holiday horror flick left The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 a clear opening to remain on top for a third weekend in a row.
A three-peat isn't completely unexpected given that the big holiday ruckus doesn't start until Star Wars returns to the big screen in two weeks, but it's some comfort for the final chapter of the franchise which has been lagging hard compared to all three of its predecessors. With just $227 million in its third weekend, Part 2 is unlikely to break $300 million, the only one of the four to fail to do so.
Krampus may have landed in second place, but with $16 million it not only promised profits for Universal it also did well by any horror movie standard, much less a holiday horror flick. Expect it to fade fast and quiet, but not before proving that sometimes people like a scare other than their credit card statement at Christmas time.
