You guys, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in finally in theaters THIS WEEK. The cast has been doing a ton of press leading up to the release, but Adam Driver; who will play possible villain Kylo Ren is also doing some advocacy work. Driver, a veteran of the armed service, recently traveled to the Middle East to bring some entertainment and fun to military personnel currently protecting our country. Adam Driver’s excursion was taped, and a hilarious moment was captured.
One of the soldiers asked the Girls star if Star Wars: The Force Awakens was going to be better than the prequels. His response was amazing:
I don’t know about you guys, but that really cracked me the hell up. It’s like he knew what the most politically correct statement would have been, but his honesty kicked in and took over. He even tried to cover the camera in vain as it happened, despite the fact that he was clearly mic’d and therefore it couldn’t help much even if the lens was covered.
As much as it’s enjoyable to laugh at Adam Driver’s response, I will say that it does make me feel (pardon the pun) a new hope regarding the quality of The Force Awakens. Driver had such a strong knee jerk reaction- he didn’t even have time to think about the validity and strengths of the prequels vs The Force Awakens. He knew for a fact that it was going to be better- which I love.
Adam Driver is known to have a rather boisterous personality, which certainly showed in this video. Similar to his character in Girls, he seems to contain little filter and has a true passion for the things he believes in. Since appearing on the HBO comedy, for which he received three prime time Emmy nominations, Driver has developed quite the successful film career- often playing similarly outrageous characters. He appeared 2014’s This Is Where I Leave You, and even had a part in Lincoln before landing the role of Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens.
While Adam Driver’s hilarious response to the prequel question is gold- you should really watch the full video that the clip is apart of. The video revolves around Arts in The Armed Forces, a non-profit that Driver recently created. The goal of the organization is to bring fine arts and theater to the military, as well as create a stronger relationship between the theater community and members of the armed forces.
Knowing that The Force Awakens will be undoubtedly better than the most recent additions to the Star Wars franchise is the perfect way to go into this exciting week in film. Driver’s approval will help us be able to settle into our movie theater seats, relax, and take in all the awesomeness that’s coming our way.
