For all the trailers, posters, and marketing material Disney has rolled out in anticipation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, they must be commended for keeping so much of the film’s actual premise under wraps. Sure, we know certain key factors – Finn (John Boyega) will pick up a lightsaber to battle Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), who aims to "finish" what Darth Vader started, etc. – but ultimately the trailers have not telegraphed the entire plot, unlike some upcoming releases. However, for all the film’s secrecy, it seems that Han Solo, the biggest scoundrel in the galaxy, may have just Tweeted a major potential spoiler for the film- check it out below.
Released on Star War's account, the Tweet suggests that Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren will engage in a sword fight at some point during The Force Awakens. If this turns out to be the case, it could indicate that Rey has a connection with the force, and could potentially become a Jedi at some point during the continuation of the saga. Beyond that, Rey’s last name has yet to be revealed so a connection to the force could indicate that she bears a genetic connection to one of the original trilogy’s headlining characters – except Chewbacca.
If Rey ends up becoming a Jedi at some point during the new Star Wars films it would represent a major shift for the franchise. Female Jedi are not necessarily new, but it would mark the first time that a non-male force adept played a central role in the live-action narrative of the Star Wars universe. The animated Clone Wars series featured Jedi Ahsoka Tano, and many of the video games such as Knights of the Old Republic have featured prominent female Jedi, but Leia sensing Luke's survival at the end of Return of the Jedi was the closest the Star Wars films have come to a central female character utilizing the force.
Of course, The Hollywood Reporter has already noted that it remains entirely plausible that Ford merely made a mistake and tweeted Rey when he meant to say Finn – referencing the aforementioned battle between Finn and Kylo Ren. Ford has thus far played pretty fast and loose with the promotion of the film so it wouldn’t seem outside the realm of possibility that he tweeted the wrong name either by accident or even as a means of misdirection. It's worth noting the fact that he also misspelled Kylo Ren in the Tweet so it would seem that anything goes in terms of mistakes.
Considering how tight lipped everyone associated with the film has been thus far, it seems unlikely that we will receive a definitive answer until we see the film for ourselves. Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters on December 18.
