It's hard to call an opening higher than $100 million weak, but the arrival of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 hit the box office with more of an underwhelming pop than a finale explosion.

It was an easy number one for the final instalment of the Hunger Games franchise, just making it over the triple digit mark with a $101 million debut. But it's a steep drop for the movie series that has seen its last three movie open at $152 million, $158 million, and $121 million respectively.

Domestically the franchise has also seen a sharp drop in overall sales from the first two entries to the third. If that trend holds, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 may be the only one to miss the $300 million mark in North America.

Holiday comedy The Night Before didn't get the warmest of seasons greetings from audiences. No one expected the rated-R comedy to break any records, but a $10 million fourth place start was more lump of coal than Christmas candy in Sony's holiday stocking. With a $25 million budget to recover, The Night Before is going to have to bank on some international back up to get out of the red.

Critical buzz for The Secret in Their Eyes hasn't been huge, but with names like Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts attached the movie could have hoped for better than $6 million on opening weekend. By the numbers, that's the lowest ever wide opening for Ejiofor, and the lowest for Roberts since 1996's Mary Reilly

Spotlight has been slowly widening over the last two weeks, and despite less than 600 venues carrying it this weekend it pushed up to the top ten, adding %3.6 million ot its %5 million total this weekend. Its sensitive topic makes it a tough sell in wide release, but this slow cinematic inoculation seems to be working in its favour. Whether or not it can expand wider in the midst of a holiday season is yet to be seen.
