Mission: Impossible 6 Just Found The Perfect Director

If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation continued the franchise’s upward swing in quality and reaffirmed the notion of Tom Cruise as a force to be reckoned with at the box office. With such success it seems that the powers that be have no interest in changing horses midstream.
 
Christopher McQuarrie posted a Tweet earlier this morning confirming his involvement as the director for Mission: Impossible 6:
 

Over the last few years, Tom Cruise seems to have found something of a kindred spirit in the form of McQuarrie. Together they have collaborated on some of the iconic action star’s best work since the resurgence of his career began, such as Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow (or Live. Die. Repeat.) and most recently Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Although the news has only just been announced, reaction on Twitter has generally been positive and supportive, reaffirming the notion that McQuarrie most certainly has the chops to take this franchise into the future - despite the fact that McQuarrie himself had at one point said he would not return.
 
Bringing McQuarrie back again as the director for M:I 6 marks a major departure for the franchise. While certain fundamental aspects of the franchise have remained consistent between outings – such as Cruise, the Mission: Impossible theme song, and the presence of teammates like Ving Rhames’ Luther Stickell – each director has brought their own unique style to the proceedings. Brian DePalma started the franchise off as a relatively grounded espionage thriller, then handed the series off to John Woo, who turned Ethan Hunt into a dove-wielding kung-fu super spy. From there, J.J. Abrams gave Ethan a wife and Brad Bird gave him a sense of humor. Christopher McQuarrie’s influence on the franchise has seemingly been the effect of balancing out all of these styles to finally make it feel like we have a definitiveMission: Impossible style, and a definitive version of Ethan Hunt for Cruise to portray.
 
Despite the announcement, we still know little to nothing about where the story ofMission: Impossible 6 will take Ethan and his team next. As a relatively self-contained story, Rogue Nation left very little hints as to where the franchise would go from here. Given the potential for the villainous organization The Syndicate for the franchise, it seems unlikely that we have seen the last of them, and the next film may involve the IMF going in to clean up the remnants of the titular rogue nation.
