Edgar Wright is about to take his first step into animation directing - and it looks like a doozy. But, the deja vu is real. Let me break it down for you.
Wright’s upcoming animated film is going to revolve around the concept of shadows, according to The Wrap. It is still early in this film’s development process, although it does have a working title: Me & My Shadow. While Wright is sure to make his film original, this is a concept that we’ve seen before from Dreamworks, and quite recently.
Originally set to be released in spring 2014, the original Me & My Shadow never made it into the theatres. The anticipated original film was to star Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, and Bill Hader, and the company went so far as to announce it and release a teaser poster. After that, development hell took another victim and we never got to see the shady flick.
Wright will be completely revising the upcoming Me & My Shadow, retaining little but the original title moving forward. This, coming after the director parted ways with Ant-Man, makes for an interesting development in the path of Wright’s career.
Known for his original vision and exciting take on challenging projects, Wright has already seemed to do the impossible in his directing career. Being able to successfully adapt Scott Pilgrim Vs The World was no easy feat, especially in a world where comic book adaptations are the new normal. Rather than do a serious live-action film, Wright was able to keep the feel of a comic book in Scott Pilgrim, making both fans of the series, as well as new audience members happy. Like I said, doing the impossible. Wright’s experience with Scott Pilgrim also shows his ability to utilize visual effects and animation. Now he’ll have to take a big leap forward, with a project that is completely animated.
Edgar Wright will have some help with the project. Comedian, and Wright’s close friend, David Walliams will be co-writing the film. Moviegoers know him from Dinner for Schmucks and TV viewers know him from Little Britain, but Walliams is also a children’s book author who will be able to bring that family-oriented sensibility to Me & My Shadow. Plus, having the co-writers be friends who find each other hilarious will probably make for a strong showing in the film itself.
I’ll say that I’m excited to see how Me & My Shadow brings Wright’s sense of comedy to a family film. And if the film doesn’t happen, well, it’s just a passing shadow. Again.
