With the release of Jessica Jones on Netflix, Marvel Studios is done for the year when it comes to releasing new titles – but 2016 is a whole new ball game. Phase Three is kicking off on the big screen, and now we have our first official look at the film that is going to kick it all off: Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: Civil War!
Based on a script by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus (the scribes behind the first two Captain America movies), Civil War begins with Cap (Chris Evans) and his Avengers teammates (Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle) doing what they can to keep our world safe. Unfortunately, when a major tragedy occurs, people begin to question whether or not superheroes should have full autonomy as international first responders. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) comes out in favor of new legislation, but this puts him in direct conflict with Cap, who still has some serious trust issues with the government after the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. This leads to alliances between heroes and some major clashes, but the big question that hangs in the air after Marvel dropped the trailer is, "whose side are you on?"
Make no mistake, the battle lines have drawn in the post Captain America: The Winter Soldier world, with friends being divided, and allegiances having been formed – all in the name of a greater good that neither side can agree on. And you can be assured that there are more allies waiting in the wings to take up arms for either camp. In other words, it looks like every bit the political thriller we'd expect from a film based on the comic run of the same name.
There are so many little details to pick up on during the two and a half minute teaser for Captain America: Civil War. Things like the return of William Hurt's General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, and the Sokovia Accords that will lead to / supercede the Superhero Registration Act, or Bucky's official break from his Soviet programming. Not to mention we got our first look at Black Panther kicking ass in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - albeit its only in his costumed form. But perhaps the biggest punch is the verbal exchange between Cap and Tony at about 02:01, in which Steve Rogers goes to bat for his childhood friend... and breaks the heart of another compatriot in the process. As if the trailer didn't put a fine enough button on the war between Avengers, the official poster says it all:
